U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna Secures Endorsement from Competitive Markets Action

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Today, Competitive Markets Action (CMA) announced their endorsement of Representative Anna Paulina Luna, R-St. Petersburg, for Congress in Florida’s 13th Congressional District. Luna has been an unwavering leader against the China-backed EATS Act, H.R. 4417/S. 2019, led by Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-IA, and Sen. Roger Marshall, R-KS.

In March, Luna led a Congressional letter to House Agriculture Committee leaders against EATS, a measure that would nullify countless state laws and elections across America and would put countless American family farmers out of business, in order to accommodate and provide more market share for Smithfield, a Chinese-owned company that was purchased in 2013 by the WH Group and whose purchase was financed by the Chinese Communist Party. She was joined by House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good, R-Va., as well as Reps. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., Nancy Mace, R-S.C., Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., Matt Rosendale, R-Mont., Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., and Tim Burchett, R-Tenn. Thousands of American, family-owned pork farmers and companies oppose the EATS Act, which would undercut their investments in housing systems that are more humane and comply with voter-approved laws in the United States.

The EATS Act aims to overturn state laws enacted by voters which require whole pork cuts sold in those states to be sourced from farms where sows are allowed to lie down, stand up, and turn around. As today’s letter notes, a legal challenge to these state laws was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court in a strongly worded opinion by Justice Neil Gorsuch, a Trump appointee, and joined by fellow conservative Justices Clarence Thomas and Amy Coney Barrett. A slimmed down version of EATS that made an exception for eggs was unfortunately included in the House Farm Bill passed by the Committee in May and is being pushed by President Joe Biden’s Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, D-IA, a former Governor of Iowa who has a long history of supporting factory farming and foreign multinational conglomerates that run the American Meat Cartel.

Luna also cosponsored the FIGHT Act, H.R. 2742, that would crackdown on cockfighting activity in the United States that has led to the rapid spread of Avian Influenza and NewCastle Disease, and driven up the cost of poultry for American consumers.

"Rep. Luna has proven herself a fierce advocate for competitive markets and preventing a Chinese takeover of American pork production, and we are proud to endorse her," said Marty Irby, president and CEO at Competitive Markets Action. "Luna is a tireless leader and tremendous powerhouse in Congress. The great people of the 13th District are fortunate to have her representing them."
